Top 5 travel tips in New Orleans

1. Life is a carnival!

Mardi Gras is one of the major festivals celebrated in New Orleans. The first parade took place on Shrove Tuesday in 1938. Mardi Gras is the last day of Carnival, a date when the city is flooded with madness and fun. Every year, 70 parades march and dance along the streets of New Orleans during the Carnival season, from January 6 to Fat Tuesday. The krewes carefully pick their colours and costumes to fill the streets with colours and fun. People watch from the balconies or they dress up and their colourful beaded necklaces cannot be missed. Later, these pendants are placed around the city to be seen all year round.

2. Cruise along the Mississippi River

If we name the famous Mississippi River, some images might come to your mind. The old steamboats navigating up and down the river, the stories Mark Twain told us about Tom Sawyer, a young boy growing up along the river or Boy George in the video of Karma Chameleon, set in Mississippi in 1870. Any memories the name might bring can also become a reality. Now you can get on board the American Queen and explore the fabulous sights along the river. The lower region will expose you to vegetation, antebellum plantations and Civil War memorials and the upper region of the Mississippi reveals vibrant cities, local wildlife and the places where Mark Twain got his inspiration for his stories.

3. Get a ride on the oldest tram

It is one of the most typical things to do in New Orleans. The St, Charles Streetcar is a historic line and the oldest continuously operating streetcar line in the world. It has been in operation around the city since 1835, connecting Canal Street with the west of the city thanks to its peculiar green wagons. Enjoy a ride on this symbol of charm and romance.

4. Eat your way through!

Discover the fabulous food of New Orleans is an essential part of your southern experience. The French influence is highly present in their cuisine that you can taste at many of the legendary restaurants in the city such as Antoine’s. The best way to experience the food is by taking a culinary tour where a local guide will take you around, introducing you to the southern taste and with the opportunity of sampling some cocktails and tasting some wine. Real foodies can find great pleasure when delighting their taste buds with crawfish etouffee, jambalaya, a po-boy sandwich stuffed with oysters or a bowl of gumbo. Do you have a sweet tooth? Try some snowballs in the summer, seasonal treats like the New Orleans King cakes or the pralines, a unique candy loved by visitors and locals alike.

5. Great shopping all year round

The eclectic nature of the city is reflected in everything that is available to purchase. From funky art finds to one-of-a-kind antiques, every shop or art market is like a well planned museum with special collections curated to please every buyer. Music lovers will find unique records and great books of local music and the renowned Magazine Street in the French Quarter. Any other items of clothing, jewellery, costumes, souvenirs and more await for you to come over and have a look before you shop til you drop!
